HPV STD
According to the statistics, the incidence of HPV STD rises from year to year. Worldwide, HPV is known to be among the most frequent cutaneous viral infections. HPV is a group of about 100 types that can be passed from one person to another by skin-to-skin contact. Some types, called genital HPV types, are usually spread sexually and tend to infect genital and anal areas. HPV infection is not accompanied by evident signs in a large amount of cases and it is also possible that it will go away with no treatment.
HPV has been found to be responsible for various epithelial pathological conditions, like papillomas, condylomas, dysplasia and carcinoma. Condylomas (genital warts) are the most prevalent HPV STD. They are non-malignant growths with variable form, color and size. Genital warts do not often cause serious troubles for the health. Genital warts may be removed by different ways, but only a qualified person can choose an adequate management for patients with this condition.
It was shown that almost one half of sexually active population will be infected with genital types of HPV. HPV is very infectious and in case of the intercourse with HPV-positive person the probability of transmission of the virus is about 50%. In females some genital HPV types can infect cervix, triggering pathological transformations in the squamous cells. There are two common HPV induced diseases: condylomas, the most frequent HPV STD, and dysplasia of the genital epithelial membranes. Cervical cancer, the most severe condition caused by HPV, grows from dysplasia of the cervix. According the statistics, cancerous lesions of the cervix are positive for HPV in about 95% cases.
As a rule, HPV STD develops if the immune protection of the HPV infected person is suppressed. In general, the immune system of our organism is able to repress the activity of viruses and harmful bacteria. Due to this fact, HPV infection does not manifest itself in the majority of cases. If HPV-infected person has some problems with immune protection, the virus becomes more active and it causes changes in the cells. Cells start to grow disorderly which may lead to the development of different kinds of tumors. It has been proved that HPV STD treatment is much more effective if it involves reinforcing of the patient’s immune protection.
