A procedure of cold knife cone biopsy is performed on the cervix affected with dysplasia or genital wart.
It can be performed only in the hospital under general anesthesia. This procedure obtains a large sample of the abnormal tissue from the cervix for further examination to diagnose precancerous changes or to treat cancer. Its another name is cervical conization.

There is a risk of infection, scarring, and extensive bleeding after the operation; it may also cause problems with a later pregnancy. The patients should avoid sexual intercourse and douching for 4 to 6 weeks. After the procedure cramping, discomfort, and bleeding are possible.
