A colposcope, which is an electrical microscope, is used to view the cervix after an acidic solution has been applied so that abnormal areas will appear white. From the areas that appear white, biopsies or tissue samples, will be taken using small biopsy forceps or a large needle. A colposcopy procedure may be necessary to evaluate a human papilloma virus infection causing ASCUS.
