Many HPV infected women achieve immunity to abnormal cells of the cervix. They cannot be reinfected, nor transmit this particular strain of HPV. However since they carry the virus, they are still susceptible to other strains. After the age of 30 a combination of Pap smear and HPV test should be performed.
